This week, the Vocal Jazz Trio series at Long Waits turns the spotlight on Huyen Pieu, a voice full of fire, groove, and soul. With the theme "Groove Revival", she dives into the roots of R&B, soul, and funk, bringing them into conversation with the improvisational spirit of jazz.

This week, we travel back to 1959 – the golden year of jazz, when hard bop and modern jazz reached their peak. Alongside legendary milestones like Kind of Blue (Miles Davis), Giant Steps (John Coltrane), and Mingus Ah Um (Charles Mingus), we find the voice of Jimmy Heath – a remarkable saxophonist, composer, and arranger, deeply rooted in the vibrant jazz scenes of Philadelphia and New York.

Jimmy Heath was celebrated not only for his warm, lyrical tenor saxophone sound but also for his brilliance as a composer and arranger. As a leading figure of the hard bop era, he left a profound mark on peers like John Coltrane and Benny Golson, while inspiring generations of musicians that followed.

Amid the dazzling creativity of 1959, Heath released The Thumper – an album that captured the essence of hard bop: blues-inflected, rhythmically driving, and beautifully balanced between bold horn arrangements and the fluid sophistication of the rhythm section. With an all-star lineup including Nat Adderley (cornet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Albert Heath (drums), the record solidified Heath’s place in the golden age of jazz.
